Barry Brown was only 16 when he started recording with the Aliens, along Rod Taylor. He was among a trove of roots singers who emerged from Kingston's ghettos during the mid-1970s. Typical of those artistes, Brown recorded for many producers most notably Bunny Lee, Clement “Coxsone” Dodd and Rodguel « Blackbeard » Sinclair. He quickly became popular with various hit songs.
« Pass Up The Chalice » is a 12 songs album that recalls Barry Brown’s recording sessions with Rodguel « Blackbeard » Sinclair. It was the golden era of reggae and songs like « Rich Man Poor Man », « Bad Girl » or « Separation » are some of the best from that time. King Tubby and Scientist were at the control, along top Jamaican musicians such as Sly & Robbie, Horsemouth and many more.
Barry Brown, an asthmatic, died at the very young age of 42 in 2004. This album is the opportunity to remember or discover his early work in Kingston’s studios.

Barry Brown n’a pas encore 16 ans lorsqu’il débute sa carrière de chanteur à Kingston au sein du groupe les Aliens, accompagné de Rod Taylor. Leurs premiers enregistrements ne rencontrent pas le succès escompté et il décide de se lancer dans une carrière solo. Toujours pas majeur, il débute sa collaboration avec différents producteurs jamaïcains et enchaine rapidement ses premiers succès.
Cet album regroupe ses enregistrements réalisés entre 1978 et 1983 sous la houlette de Rodguel « Blackbeard » Sinclair. C’est l’âge d’or du reggae et la voix de Barry Brown va être sublimée par le travail des incontournables King Tubby et Scientist à la console de mixage, à coups de delay et révèrbe.
Pass Up The Chalice, c’est l’occasion de découvrir et d’apprécier un jeune chanteur des ghettos de Kingston au sommet de son art, au travers d’une série de hits imparables, tels « Séparation » ou « Pass Up The Chalice », quelques raretés comme son featuring avec le DJ Trinity « Coolie Carry Basket » et même quelques inédits, sortis des archives de « Blackbeard » !
